Dew Daze

It rarely rains in Colorado
rarely clouds over and leaves dew on the grass
the precipitation we encounter is of a beauty all its own
but on days when it rains
the whole landscape is doused in revitalization
like the African elephants
who bathe in the glorious showers from above
I wait for the days when it rains
and relish the unique beauty it brings

As a child I remember one Easter Sunday
when it had rained all morning and left a fog over the entire city
While I waited for my mother to get ready for church
I stood at the back door of our little house and stared out across my backyard
every color seemed to be magnified, although the fog blurred everything
the grass was greener, fresher than the day before
the vines held a deeper hue than I'd ever seen
even the wood on the fence had a beautiful shade of brown.
I stared wondrously out at the soft landscape
I was mesmerized by its tranquility
and captured by its seeming sorcery

Although I've lived half my life since then
I still stare out my window on rainy mornings
and remember how a child was once amazed by the beauty
that a dawn rain can bring to an otherwise overpopulated landscape
I still stare wholeheartedly into picturesque grasses
and my eyes are drawn magnetically across the panes of fog
until I am merely a child again, cherishing the rare refinement
of the wondrous world around me
